Umbrales (Spanish for “Thresholds”) is an immersive installation series created for Jefferson County Libraries. Drawing from my Colombian heritage, each piece in the series is inspired by the rich symbolism of portals in Magical Realism and the transportive power of books.
The work invites viewers to interact with metaphorical thresholds where identity and space intertwines. Like a book that opens into another world, each installation serves as a gateway and into the self and alternate dimensions. Through layered color fields of abstracted landscapes, Umbrales explores the tension between the real and the imagined. These liminal spaces become opportunities for self-exploration and wonder. Reminding us that libraries, like portals, are places of transformation.
