Stacey Steers constructed The Stars Watch from Long Ago using thousands of intricate paper collages to create an experimental, handmade animation. The work features archival images from early silent films and other sources that explore personal relationships, science fiction, the natural world, and cinematic language.
For The Stars Watch from Long Ago, Steers seamlessly lifted images from the films of three silent film actors—Lillian Gish, Janet Gaynor, and Ana Torrent—and recast them within a contemplative, uncanny epic. The work opens with a tiny farmhouse spinning through the cosmos, carrying Gish alone in the vastness. This dreamlike construction unfolds as a surreal meditation on wonder, loss, connection, and longing. Wildfires, an existential threat in Colorado, emerge as a key element.
This film is a collaboration between Steers and John Romano. Steers authored the concept, sourced the collage elements, and designed and crafted all of the handmade collages, which were shot in sequence. Romano edited the material, added additional design, and expanded the film’s vocabulary in the construction and editing process. The sound design is by Udit Duseja.
