The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art presents
Young Artists at Work, a summer series of art and performance workshops for youth ages 6-14.
Young Artists at Work offers students of all skill levels and interests the unique opportunity to make art in a museum setting. The hands-on, interdisciplinary and age-appropriate workshops incorporate visiting guest artists and performers. Students will be exposed to and encouraged to explore new and exciting methods and materials in their artistic endeavors.
Each month of workshops focuses on a different theme in contemporary art based on exhibits and performances at BMoCA and the work of guest artists. Two four-day workshops are offered each month.
The workshops consist of three age groups: 6-8 year olds, 9-11 year olds and 12-14 year olds. Each age group will have their own instructor and assistants in addition to the guest artists. Groups are designed with a small student to teacher ratio to allow for maximum individual attention.
Young Artists at Work 2006
This summer, Young Artists at Work invites students to rethink their ideas of what can be used to create art and where contemporary art can be found. Each workshop focuses on transforming the world around us into art, from reinventing how we use materials and space to using our hands and movements to tell a story. At the end of each week, students will host an opening reception of their work for family and friends at BMoCA.
Contemporary Craft
Transform traditional craft mediums into fine art and design. Creations can be functional, decorative, funky or delicate. Inspired by the work of BMoCA exhibiting artists Tracy Krumm and Emmi Whitehorse, students will use familiar materials in new ways and observe the artistry of design. Sculptor Martha Russo will be the guest artist for Workshop 1. Paper artist Wendy Rochman will be the guest artist for Workshop 2.
Workshop 1: June 19, 20, 21 & 22 from 9am to noon
Workshop 2: June 26, 27, 28 & 29 from 9am to noon
Art All Around
After visiting the studio and home of artist Rebecca DiDomenico, whose work will be at the museum throughout the summer, students will explore the idea that “art is life". Using installation art techniques, students will transform the front of the museum from a plain room into a floor-to-ceiling art environment.
Workshop 3: July 10, 11, 12 & 13 from 9am to noon SOLD OUT!
Workshop 4: July 17, 18, 19 & 20 from 9am to noon
Performance & Puppetry
Found-objects will find new identities as puppets. Students will discover new ways to express themselves without words, using mime and theatrics. Led by BMoCA's resident theater company Theatre 13, students will use European performance techniques and puppetry as a way to transform the power of gesture into physical theater.
Workshop 5: July 31, August 1, 2 & 3 from 9am to noon
Workshop 6: August 7, 8, 9 & 10 from 9am to noon
Please note that students may enroll in one workshop or multiple workshops. Students who choose to attend both workshops in one month will receive new projects that further explore that month’s
theme.
$125 per workshop ($100 per workshop for BMoCA members)
