An education program presented by Theatre13

Through the vitality and diversity of our education program, Theatre13 seeks to engage the community in a dialogue of ideas that will awaken and nourish the emerging artist. The launch of Studio13 classes is a first step towards this ambition.  

Adult Classes

An Introduction to Acting
Taught by Michael French
Working from a foundation that is designed to free the beginning actor of self-consciousness, “An Introduction to Acting” offers a precise program for committed students of all levels. Students will not only learn how to trust their instinct, but how to use their experience and imagination to find their own unique expression.  Staged in three sessions, 5 classes per session, this a course is a good starting point for those wishing to discover the fun and deep satisfaction of creative expression.   

* Free introductory class Monday, September 11th, 7pm.     

Session 1:  The Tools and Skills of Acting     
 Sept. 18 – Oct. 16, 2006 (Mondays)
This class will explain the job of an actor; how to build favorable conditions for creativity; how to cultivate your experience and imagination; how to act before you think, and the power of concentration, improvisation, and memorization.  

Session 2:  Scene Study     
Oct. 23 – Dec. 18, 2006 (Mondays)   
This class is devoted to how to read a play and personalize and build a character.    

Session 3:  Truth in Performance     
Jan. 8 – Feb. 5, 2007 (Mondays)  
This class will show how to prepare for a scene; the difference between truth and belief on stage; the importance of a physical action; how to find the truth of a moment, the notion of externals, and how to troubleshoot acting problems.

Moving Through - Creative Movement
Taught by Venus French and Tara King
Discover your unique way of moving alone, with others and with the universal rhythms inspiring all of life. Rather than having steps to follow, this class is about finding your own inimitable dance. Warm-up exercises and simple movement practices, when combined with breath, offer a chance for deeper connection to one’s core.  Arrive and allow yourself to be gently guided and divinely moved.

* Free introductory class Thursday, October 12th, 5:30-6:45pm.

Family Dancing
Taught by Venus French and Tara King
A fun, creative-movement opportunity for the whole family. Guided exercises, song and story will get everybody flowing, connecting and breathing.  Move with your child as part of a larger community.   A class for kids of all ages and the caregivers who love them.

Animal Acting
Taught by Kjersti Webb and Lucia Rich
A dynamic class that uses animal movement as the basis for creating human characters.  Students will learn to walk, talk, and act like rodents, birds, cats, dogs, amphibians, insects, and monkeys.  Prepare yourself for a wild safari of the imagination.

On the last day of each session there will be a showing of our work together.

Puppetry and Image Making
Taught by Kjersti Webb and Lucia Rich
This class explores the creation of puppets and objects in space. Students will use parts of the body and “found” objects to tell stories and create characters. Each student will create and develop a unique puppet character, along with some writing and performing of short scenes.

Kamera Kids
Taught by Philip Van Scotter
Students will learn the basics of digital video camera operation in a cooperative and creative setting.  What is the difference between a medium close-up and a wide-angle shot? Individuals and/or small teams will create a short film/video project as the culmination of their learning experience.   A “hands-on” introduction into the art of film and video creation.  

Bring your own digital video camera if you have one (preferably one that uses MiniDV tapes).

* Free demonstration day -  Saturday, Sept. 2nd, 11am to noon at BMoCA.

Teacher’s Biography
Michael French
is originally from London, England and has studied acting at the New Arts Studio in London, England, The Acting Studio in New York City, and the art of directing under the esteemed tutelage of Mr. Alex Hirst.

Venus French, LSW, CST, mother of one, is trained in classical ballet and modern dance, and has grooved around the world on her in-line skates as a disco and hip-hop skater and certified in-line skating instructor. Venus works with Gabrielle Roth’s Five Rhythms and has studied with Vinn Marti of Soul Motion. Using her healing and counseling skills Venus creates a safe environment in which to move.

Tara King, MA. Ed. and certified birth and parenting educator, has worked for over a decade with families in the childbearing cycle of life and women of all ages regarding rhythm and cycles. A mother of two, she has spent the last several years studying and working with movement educator Melissa Michaels.

Kjersti Webb (pronounced Shesh-tee) has extensive experience in clown, buffoon, mime, mask, Dell Arte, Le Coque and Phillipe Gaullier. She has taught Jujitsu, worked as a nanny, and thrives in her role as a mom. She has taught theatre to children and teens in Sweden  and Switzerland and is very excited to teach in Boulder.

Lucia Rich has been creating, collaborating, and performing innovative original works of dance, theatre, and clown for over ten years. Her love of the expressive arts led her to receive a BFA in Theatre from Maharishi University, Fairfield, IA, and an MFA in
Actor Created Physical Theatre from Naropa/LISPA
(London International School of Performing Arts).

Philip Van Scotter
is a musician, actor, and filmmaker.  He has created several short films as director, actor, cinematographer, editor, and composer.  After working in film and theatre in New York City between 1998 and 2001, he returned to his hometown of Boulder, Colorado where he continues to create theatre, music, and multi-media art.
