When I begin a new painting, I often spend hours arranging the simple household objects, moving them a fraction of an inch closer to or farther from one another. What I am waiting for is that moment when, through their relationship to one another and to their surroundings, the spirit of the objects and the tension between them suddenly becomes palpable. It is this sense of energy and tension, more than the literal objects, that I strive to capture on canvas. Through a very deliberate and thoughtful manipulation of color and form, the still life in front of me becomes a catalyst for a stronger, clearer, unique creation that is more than the sum of its parts.
