Young Artists at Work

Summer Art Experience
Ages 5-10

YAW image

Get ready for an exciting summer! Young Artists at Work is an interdisciplinary art program featuring an exciting summer schedule designed to jump-start young peoples' inherent creativity. Art exhibits in the museum's galleries inspire students, while visiting artists provide hands-on instruction. Each week-long workshop culminates in a student exhibit and reception at the museum. All levels of interest and ability are welcome!

Each five-day workshop is taught by two specialized arts educators-who also happen to be professional artists-as well as a visiting artist with demonstrated flair in the chosen theme. The classes are intentionally kept small in order to provide each student with plenty of individualized attention. Full and half-day options are available.

The cost is $140 for non-members, $120 for museum members. A family membership to the museum starts at $55 per year. During the weeks of June 23-27 and July 14-18, join us for two workshops, bring a lunch, and stay for the day! A weekly $20 supervision fee applies.

Registration begins Monday, March 3rd, and remains open up to a week before each workshop. Advance registration is recommended. You can register at the museum, or by downloading the registration form here and mailing it to the museum with a check.

SUMMER 2008 Schedule:

Bird, Sky, and Other Wonders with Julia Lunk (www.lunkjuli.com)
June 9-13, 9am-noon
Look to the sky! Step outside the everyday world you live in and step inside the magical, fairytale imagination of Hungarian artist Juli Lunk.  Explore watercolor techniques, make kites and birds, and create fantastical flying fruit and vegetable creatures to inhabit the museum’s galleries.

String Theory with Will Clift (www.willclift.com)
June 23-27, 9am-noon
Bring science and art together to create dynamic hanging mobiles.  Sculptor Will Clift will teach you the simple properties of gravity and balance to make installation art that fills a gallery space.  Use wire, wood, and string embellished with bright colors to dazzle and delight your environment.

Oh Honeybee! with Laura Tyler (www.lauratyler.com)
June 23-27, 1-4pm
Artist and beekeeper Laura Tyler invites you to make art inspired by patterns found in nature.  Looking closely at the world of honeybees, honeycombs, bugs, and flowers, you will paint, collage, and learn wax techniques to recreate Mother Nature’s beauty in your own works of art.

Fusion Fun with Angela Beloian (www.beloian.com)
July 14-18, 9am-noon
What do cherry blossoms and Pokemon have in common?  Japan, of course! Explore the traditional arts of Japanese ink drawing and origami with artist Angela Beloian.  Layer these elements with the contemporary art of anime and Japanimation and invent your own Japanimation character to create unique works on paper.

Sensing Your World with Erin Donnelly (www.erindonnelly.com)
July 14-18, 1-4pm
How to depict a cool river stone, the smell of a growing tree, or the fur of a stalking cat?  Join artist Erin Donnelly in an experimental collage workshop where you will explore the tactile qualities of the world around you, employing the variety of color and texture found in paper, fabric, and paint.

Trash to Treasure with Angela Beloian (www.beloian.com)
July 28-August 1, 9am-noon
Discarded doorknobs, hopeless hinges, and worn-out wingnuts! Abandoned and found objects become sculptural masterpieces. Artist Angela Beloian joins us again, this time in 3-D, to help you turn renew, reuse, recycle into the coolest art around.
