Visual Rhythm: Katy Dove

Katy Dove, Gondla, 2005
animated watercolor painting
3 min 20 sec
collection of Polly & Mark Addison

Conveying a sense of playfulness and whimsy not typically encountered in media art, Katy Dove’s work is characterized by an organic and informal nature. Her process begins with an automatic drawing of watercolor on paper, which is then scanned and edited on the computer. Paired with music, the animated watercolor paintings seem to leap and twirl, bend and twist, fade in and out, in a dance of lighthearted choreography.

Katy Dove was born in Oxford, England in 1970. She lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. She received a BSC in Psychology from the Glasgow University in 1992, a Foundation Certificate in Art Therapy from the Edinburgh University Settlement in 1994, and a BFA in Sculpture from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in 1995. Dove has completed artist residencies in France, Scotland, and the United Kingdom. She has exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennale (2003) and the Prague Biennale (2003), and her work was selected for Art Basel London (2005). She has exhibited at Tate Britain as part of the Art Now series (2003) and has had solo exhibitions at Transmission, Glasgow (2002) and Collective Gallery, Edinburgh (2000).
