A Retrospective: Sensuality in a World of Reason

George Woodman’s retrospective exhibition at BMoCA, Sensuality in a World of Reason surveys his paintings and photographs from 1959 to present day. The exhibition presents the many artistic accomplishments of Woodman and focuses on his role within the movement of Pattern and Decoration and as a member of the Colorado Criss-Cross Group. Sensuality in a World of Reason explores Woodman’s work in abstractions from paintings inspired by landscape to mathematical and precise patterns discovered through an appreciation for decorative arts. Each body of work in the exhibition highlights Woodman’s exquisite use of color as texture, especially in the black and white photographs where a beautiful and striking contrast is evident. In these photographs images of sculptures, rooms in European museums, contemporary nude figures, views from nature, and remembrances from childhood coalesce into narrative self-portraits. In both the paintings and the photographs, the viewer senses the delicate magic between line, form, and shape. In Sensuality in a World of Reason a romantic and heroic fascination with time and beauty is eloquently distilled into Woodman’s chosen mediums.
